Blue-winged Teal Drake

Jim Schmiedlin (1945-2015)

Bradford Woods, PA, June 2006
14.5"

Jim's carvings are amongst the most sought after of any gunning decoy maker who carved in the last 70 years.  He employed original techniques and styling into a sturdy working decoy that is immensley attractive to both waterfowl and the duck.  Something many early masters inadvertantly imparted in their own creations that have driven them to become the highly valued treasures they are today.

As with many makers, Jim kept tinkering with style and perfecting his decoy.  Many of the most valuable Schmiedlin's today are post 2000's creations, where some collectors believe Jim consistently made exceptional decoys.

The carved details reflect the level of technical creation by an ardent observer of the waterfowl he hunted and sought to achieve in wood.

This hollow carved decoy displays highly sought after carved-wings, relief carving around the ends of the primary wings, speculum, side pockets, and layered incised tail feathers.  The head is in a rested position turned gently off to the left in a highly natural appearance imparting a curious attitude in the decoy.  As usual, Jim didn't miss the mark on painting this decoy. Jim's painting technique provides a visually and physically textured surface replicating feathering in his own perfectly mastered way. The decoy retains its original keel and rigging.  Bears its created date, the JAS brand, as well as Jim's famous 'Reward for Return' label.
